Female gamers. Urban Legend or hidden deep in society?
As you might have gathered, I am a very active gamer. Especially playing Starcraft 2 has recently grasped my mind. While I was browsing TeamLiquid, a forum / website about a gaming community / professional team, I noticed a featured thread that was related to female gaming. The essence of this article was that the Electronic Sports League (ESL) has launched a female-only tournament website, where girls from all across the globe can compete with eachother. First off, I very much promote the fact that women get more of a visible presence in the eSports community. However what I am so very much against is the separate leagues that they deem neccesary.
One major concern that you often hear from the female community (and the occasional, actually decent, guy), is that women get way too much bullshit on their neck because they have been born female and happen to have a pair of boobs. A vast majority of the male demographic is reacting immature due to this fact and basicly show a mindset of “Oh it has a vagoo so I can hit on it or make it feel like shit because I must be superior”. I hate that behaviour. One thing I used to do when I played WoW, was to make sure that in my guild there was atleast one female officer, one who could back up the position without needing their physical treats. It created equality in the guild, and of course there were the playfull “sammich” jokes, but we had everything under control where people wouldn’t cross a line. And it worked!
Women are at all times equal to the man. They are human and they should be treated like a human. Not like a pair of boobs with a vagoo that likes it up the ass, so to speak. Which is why I personally feel that the use of gender-specific tournaments or sports are on the err… side of things. I think it’s quite understandable in football (or soccer for you Americans) due to the physical aspects of being different genders. However in a game like Starcraft 2, you won’t win the game because you’ve got good looks. You win the game because you as player are better at what you do and how you do it.
Why do you women need to separate yourself from the male demographic in specific tournaments. It will not give you any increased respect, rather you may be trolled and offended even more because creepers will use the names and the information to contact more women. You put yourself in a position where you’re vunerable as the average man will see the lack of women participating in male-dominated tournaments as a sign that you’d be “worse” than them, thus disturbing this equilibrium we should aim to achieve.
How do you get the respect of male gamers as a girl? Not with your body. That will make you get marked as a slut,whore and whatnot.No, you join the competition and you show you can manage to compete, rather than having a separate league to put yourself as different. Come on and show us males that you’re here to kick ass and dominate the game like you are capable of. Show men they aren’t. But remember one thing
You are not special because you have a vagoo or a pair of boobs. In Gaming that is.
